Backyard Jazz Orchestra1

BACKYARD JAZZ ORCHESTRA

This project is the latest of many that Stefan Schultze – pianist, composer and winner of the WDR Jazz Prize – and saxophonist Peter Ehwald have brought to live together. Just a short while ago they travelled the countries of South Eastern Europe, where they presented their music, performed with local musicians, and soaked up the rhythms and melodies of the region. With the support of the Goethe Institute they founded the Backyard Jazz Orchestra (BJO), in order to present the rich musical heritage of the Balkans in a setting that is more contemporary jazz than anything else. The band consists of some of the most prestigious musicians of the region as well as the best newcomers. If you are aquatinted to the joy in experimentation and the expressive style of Schultze’s and Ehwald’s writing, you will have a hunch that the music of the BJO is even more exciting and crazier than the music we know from the Balkans: melodies that bring tears to our eyes, galloping rhythms in odd meters, drunken hymns to life.
