JERRY GONZALEZ Y EL COMANDO DE LA CLAVE

Launching his career in 1970 as a member of Dizzy Gillespie’s band, Jerry Gonzalez worked with Eddie Palmieri (El Son), Manny Oquendo (Conjunto Libre) and his brother Andy (Conjunto Anabacoa, Grupo Folklórico y Experimental Nuevayorquino), before releasing his first album as a leader „Ya Yo Me Cure“ in 1980. No doubt, his real talent came to the fore with Jerry Gonzalez and the Fort Apache Band, a group that released many successful albums, and got series of accolades including two Grammy nominations, several awards for The Beyond Group of the Year (DownBeat), Jazz Record of the Year (l’Academie du Jazz, France), Best Jazz Group (Playboy Magazine), and Best Latin Jazz Group (New York Jazz Awards).
Gonzalez relocated to Madrid in 2000. The trumpeter went there for just one day during the tour with „Calle 54“ project and ended up living there, immersing himself in the flamenco scene. With his new group El Commando De La Clave he is turning back to the Fort Apache Band concept, mixing jazz language with the clave beat and Latin harmonies.
