MOSTLY OTHER PEOPLE DO THE KILLING

Mostly Other People Do the Killing formed in 2003. Bandleader Moppa Elliott and Peter Evans both studied at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Upon relocating to New York City, Elliott met Jon Irabagon through guitarist Jon Lundbom and Kevin Shea through Mary Halvorson. The band slowly began to transform from a free-improvising jazz band, to an ensemble that deconstructed both jazz standards and Elliott’s compositions, weaving in and out of styles erratically and often humorously. In 2008 they received a nomination by the Jazz Journalists Association for Small Ensemble of the Year. In 2009, they had been voted the winners of the DownBeat Critics’ Poll in the Rising Star Ensemble category.
The group has released four studio albums on Elliott’s Hot Cup label including an eponymous debut, „Shamokin!!!“, „This Is Our Moosic“ and „Forty Fort“, and a live album „The Coimbra Concert“ on Clean Feed. The latter four albums feature cover art that parodies classic albums by Art Blakey, Ornette Coleman, Roy Haynes and Keith Jarrett.
